AJ and Dad
Jingle
and dad (below), which reminds me of a story Kelly told while we were talking about
tones. In Chinese, intonation is critical. "Ma" can mean
mother, horse, ugly or it can indicate a question, depending on whether you use
a high tone, rising tone, falling tone, etc. Ba ba is Mandarin for father
if you use first tone (I think), which is high and flat. Kelly said that
a father on a previous trip was delighted when his daughter kept saying
"ba ba" over and over to him. Kelly disappointed him when she
pointed out that his daughter was grimacing and using fourth tone which is
falling then rising. She was telling him that she was making a number
two.
